BigFuture
This site is supported by College Board and has a nice college component. You can filter schools based on size of school, 2/4 year, setting of school, etc. This is a comprehensive site that also includes information on financial aid, careers, tips on admission and visiting colleges.
CaliforniaColleges.edu
All SMUHSD students have a CaliforniaColleges.edu account. It is a site for getting information about 2 year, 4 year, and Trades colleges, plus financial aid. Despite its name, this site can match students with schools around the US.
Colleges That Change Lives
This site focuses on 40 4-year colleges that champion the benefits of a liberal arts education, academic rigor, service, and meeting students where they are academically. This site has narrative descriptions of the schools, providing insights into student life, financial aid, campus life, etc.
I'm First
I'm First was started in 2013 by the Center for Student Opportunity (CSO), which "is a national nonprofit based in Bethesda, Md. that works to empower first-generation college students on the path to and through college." According to the website, "I'm First! is an online community for first-generation college students—and their supporters. Hear inspiring stories and share your own, discover colleges that care about first-gen students, find answers to your questions about college, and receive guidance on the road to and through college." There is a college match feature; several of the filters assist with searching for colleges that emphasize first-generation college bound students and allow students to search by retention rate.
Presentations
Right after school in June, Ms. Burtness held essay-writing workshops for students who will be applying to UCs and/or Common Application colleges. Additionally, she led a college search workshop. If you missed the workshops, see below for links to the PPTs and handouts.
